One of the highlights was meeting pastor Leila Piri Hansson who took time to share her testimony of coming to faith in Iran. After a long journey of trusting God she is now leading this vibrant congregation that is a hub of activity in the neigborhood. We had the opportunity to experience the language cafe they host for immigrants and asylum seekers. Seoul, South Korea - Make it stand out Grace Shim with her father Dr. David Kim. During our lunch he shared powerfully from his life experience and God’s faithfulness over all the years. Dr. Kim grew up in North Korea when it was under Japanese occupation. He shared how his family and the church were persecuted during that time, and that after the war and Japanese left the persecution was even more brutal under the Communist leadership. At the age of 11 he and his siblings were forced to flee to the south leaving family and community behind. It would be 40 years before he saw his mother again. Dr. Kim received a scholarship to study in the United States where he was trained and ordained as a pastor. They were visiting Swedish students from SVF, a Christian Folk College, who are spending a semester at North Park University. SVF has has had an exchange program for over 50 years with North Park and it was exciting to hear that it is going strong. We heard the stories from one of the first women to be ordained in the Covenant and the first superintendent. It was a tough Sunday as the previous day, ICE officers had killed Alex Pretti and there was palpable grief and sadness at all that was happening in the city. Community Covenant came together to pray and to be reminded of our call to be Christ’s ambassador’s, standing with the vulnerable, resisting violence with peaceful resitance, and to stay centered in Christ. It was a moving Sunday. Thank you Community Covenant for your faithful witness in your neighborhood and the way you encouraged and challenged my faith on this Sunday. My brother was part of organizing a gathering in his neighborhood. Though the weather was icy cold (-30C) many neighbors came out with candles to express their grief and to stay connected as a community. I was touched by the many stories I heard of people caring for their immigrant neighbors, bringing food, helping children get to school, and their desire to encourage each other in the face of fear and uncertainty. As I was reflecting on this evening I thought of all the candles people were holding and the small fire that lit up the neighborhood. We gathered around that fire with our little lights to draw hope and strength from each other. Each of the leaders pictured here leads a small group on their campus and over the past two years they have seen a growing interest among their peers to explore the Christian faith and experience deeper community. They also networked together to host an Alpha course on the campus of the Technical University and were amazed at how much interest there was. There was an excitement in the air as they shared stories about how God is moving on their campuses. One of the strengths of Credo is that it is ecumenical and invites students from various church backgrounds to network together for the common goal of deepening their relationship with Christ and welcoming new students with the hopeful message of the gospel. We are witnessing the spiritual growth of leaders as they step out in faith and try new initiatives, guide small groups and learn how to articulate the reason for their hope outside the comfort of the local church context. Credo is doing amazing work through empowering students and discipling the present and future leaders of the church. You’ll often see him with a guitar on his back riding a train or walking through the city on the way to a ministry event. Music is an important part of Max’s ministry and he uses songs as a catalyst to open up thought and discussion on Biblical themes and spiritual realities with small groups in the prison. Pray for Max and Alce and the ministries they are leading in partnership with Prison Fellowship. These include: -Building Bridges in Jirice prison- pray for God’s continued work in the lives of the participants that recently completely their sessions. -Pankrac prison where Max is serving as a mentor for a prisoner preparing for release, for small group meetings and his ministry through music. Klubik- A kids club for prisoners’ children held weekly in Prague. -Bridges Center- ministry in a local church for released prisoners hosted by Prison Fellowship. For several young seekers who volunteer here and are being impacted by the community, the bible studies, and worship times with the group. He is such a gifted pastor with a heart for discipleship and it was great to reconnect with him. Five churches partner together to run a cafe called “The Living Room.” The back story is great. In a meeting with civic and business leaders around challenges in the neighborhood a real estate developer heard of their ideas and offered to rent this space for their ministry. She asked what a reasonable rent would be, and pastor Daniel suggested they let them use it rent free. Much to everyone’s surprise the company agreed and so five days a week between 50-70 people gather here throughout the day, where they are received warmly, receive support for various needs, and build community with each other and loving volunteers. Two of them are pastor’s from participating churches. I found it inspiring to see churches working together and with community leaders to make a positive impact on the neighborhood. The response from the police and city leaders has been overwhelmingly positive and the churches have already opened another cafe in another part of the city. I find this to be such a witness to God’s healing and compassionate love in the city! Pictured here are pastors serving in Madrid, Vienna, London, Paris, Copenhagen, The Hague, Cairo, Bonn, Zurich, Geneva, and Stockholm. Over the years we have seen how these churches are a unique expression of Christ’s mission, primarily reaching immigrants in the urban setting. Having served international congregations myself in Stockholm and Tokyo I have witnessed first hand how these diverse communities bear witness to Christ’s reconciling work in the world. As the Spirit brings people together from across the globe to participate in worship, service and welcoming the stranger, lives are being touched and transformed and the dividing walls that separate people along ethnicity, nationality and social status are coming down. Those who move on to serve in other contexts often remark how their discipleship with Christ was deepened through their experience in an international congregation. As part of the event we joined in a church plant that meets on a Thursday evening in this space. For the past year and half I have partnered with Credo in supporting student leaders as they lead ministries on their campus. On this evening we visited the Credo small group that meets every week on the campus of Stockholm University. For this study Hugo was invited by the group to lead the Bible study and discussion. It was such a blessing to see him teach and interact with the students. We could feel that there is authentic community happening here where students are welcomed and nurtured in their faith. There are some exciting things happening in each of the small groups as they encourage each other in faith and also intentionally reach out beyond their small groups. The Credo leaders at the Royal Technical University have offered an Alpha Course this spring term and are excited about the response on campus. A steady group of seekers are gathering to share in a meal, bring their questions, and learn about the foundations of the Christian faith. Before coming Albania we knew very little about their difficult history as a people, how the Gospel has changed so many lives, and that the church is growing. Albania was ruled by the Ottoman Turks for nearly 500 years and the majority of the population remains nominally muslim. We felt the blending of religion as we heard both church bells and the call to prayer from the mosques ringing out throughout the city. During the brutal totalitarian rule of Enver Hoxha, (1944-1985) Albania was completely closed off from the rest of the world. All religion was brutally oppressed and ultimately banned completely. After the revolution of 1991 religious freedom was established and people were free to gather for worship. Blerim shared that there is are respectful and peaceful relations between Muslim and Christians and that many nominal muslims are curious and open to the message of the Gospel. Francisco explained that they are seeking to love and care of all artists in their network and have witnessed how the love of Christ is experienced as people are nurtured in this space. Artists attend each other’s showings, encourage each other through the highs and lows, and through the experience of mutual support and care people experience the love of God in Christ. It was so encouraging to hear stories of the many lives who have been touched by this ministry. In the spiritual sense it is a place where people can come to pray, reflect on Scripture and take a rest after a busy day. L’esale, a ministry that brings together pastors and spiritual directors from various Christian traditions. Together they offer a safe and open space for people to be listened to, pray and reflect on a Bible passage. Each night of the week people from all walks of life meet here, to unload, and to take in God’s love. Pray for Stephanie and Francisco as they host a five day retreat in December for Christian artists in the south of France. Max and Alce, who is a Czech national, were just married in April of this year. Alce is a lawyer by profession and is continuing studies in criminal justice reform. For them to experience God’s love and healing in their lives and families. The support group for released prisoners who continue to struggle to have their daily needs met and reintegrate into society.
