Visit to Prague, Czech Republic

Max McClure is serving in Prague, Czech Republic and from June 9-12, I had the chance to spend time with him and join in his ministry. He is partnering with Prison Fellowship whose vision is to “train and inspire churches and communities-inside and outside of prison-to support the restoration of those affected by incarceration.”

Max and his colleagues are engaged in a wide range of support to those affected by incarceration. Each month they visit several prisons in the region where they organize musical performances, small group Bible study, and reconciliation groups. As a musician Max shares the gift of music as a way to connect with people and invite reflection and conversation. They also organize programs for children whose parents are incarcerated, including a summer camp and weekly activities.

The ministry that I was able to participate is focused on caring for people who have recently been released from prison and are seeking to reintegrate into society.

Max is responsible for driving to the food bank and loading up a full van and then bringing it to the church where it is distributed to those recently released from prison.

Here we are gathered around the table for refreshments, sharing, a Bible reflection and a time of worship. I was struck by the loving atmosphere in the group and how invested the volunteers are in creating a safe and encouraging space.

Max, his wife Alce, (furthest right) and some of the volunteers before heading home after a wonderful gathering. Max and Alce, who is a Czech national, were just married in April of this year. Alce is a lawyer by profession and is continuing studies in criminal justice reform. Together they make an amazing team.

We can join in praying for:

The children of incarcerated parents and the programs they participate in through Prison Fellowship. For them to experience God’s love and healing in their lives and families.

The support group for released prisoners who continue to struggle to have their daily needs met and reintegrate into society.

For Max and Alce as they build their life together as husband and wife and pursue God’s call on their lives.
